Festa Della Befana

'La Festa Della Befana' in Sant’Andrea in Villis first took place on the 6th January 1988. Organized by ACLI, the Befana festival was created to carry on an old tradition. Originally it was to entertain mainly children of the members of ACLI and other local people. Year by year the event has became increasingly popular.

Eventually the festa had to be moved to a bigger location due to its popularity.

The money that has been raised from this event has gone to charity and in particular to a project called “A School for Uganda” link charity.

The 6th of January 2008 was the 21st anniversary of the Befana festa. It took place, for the first time, in the main square of Fenile (a town near the village of Sant’Andrea in Villis).

The festa opens with the arrival of the Befana. For the first time this year she arrived by sidecar rather than by horse like she has done for the last ten years. The Befana always greets the children with lots of sweets on her arrival and brings with her a special guest, Father Christmas.

The president of ACLI always introduces the festa and asks the kids to call out for the Befana. Later that day she also gives presents to the children. During the event other activities also take place, traditional games that everybody including parents and grandparents enjoy. There is a competition for for the young where the most beautiful picture and the most beautiful poem about the Befana win prizes. Typical dishes are prepared by the volunteer members of ACLI, who provide support for the association all the year through. There also are performances put on by children and line dancing for everyone. The event ends with a big raffle with lots of great prizes.
